Attention LJ GooRoos: video capture
I own a 2000-vintage, non-digital 8mm Sony camcorder.  We don't use it very often, but I do have a fair amount of footage I'd like to transfer to my computer.  How can I do this without resorting to expensive video capture hardware?

I found this device while looking for solutions; would this do the trick?  TIA for advice and suggestions.

Yea, the device you linked to should do it. Basically you plug it in, hit play on the cam, record on the computer, and it does it's thing. You'll most likely want a copy of a good vid editing program so you can work with the footage once you have it on your computer.

Cool, thx. Is there any particular editing software you'd recommend? I certainly don't need anything fancy.

I'm looking for a similar thing. I have a Sony CCD-TRV608, which has a "USB streaming" feature. Well, kind of. It doesn't behave like a normal USB device, which is to say that with Sony's proprietary software you can use it to stream video to the computer. Without Sony's software it doesn't work at all, and doesn't even show up as USB device.

Suffice to say, my only real option is to get an analog-to-digital converter box. I've been wanting to set up a Web cam of our birdfeeder for a while onw.

If you don't want to buy anything, I'd say check the local universities. You said your niece goes to Metro, right? They might have the equipment.

Our computer labs at CC have at least three of those converters, as well as a bunch of video editing software. It's free for students to use and, at least here, we have student workers on staff trained on all the equipment to help you out.

So... Ask your niece for a favor?

:) I don't have any recommendations for what equipment to buy, though. Good luck!

That would probably work, although my niece is currently going nuts with end-of-year project deadlines. My sister just told me that she's basically living in the animation lab at this point.

I think if that device I linked to works as advertised, that would be perfect--only $35. I was just worried I'd have to spend $300 on a capture card like you used to in the past. USB rules!
