Mises Blog: Paid statutory holiday

Look at that evil American government! Its people work themselves to the bone and get no vacation *at all*!

how is "holiday" defined? Here in the US I get two days off out of every seven; I would assume Finland's 40 goes beyond that? I get 0 based on the government, 3 weeks a year (past weekends) based on my company's codified policy, and more given what my boss and I can agree upon. The lower down the hierarchy I go, the better I am rewarded.

"holiday" = "paid time off". Weekends don't count unless you normally work weekends. Note that some European countries (notably France) also set the number of hours worked each week.

They're comparing days off as provided by law. It's true that there's no law requiring paid time off (except as provided by the FMLA), but many American workers get vacation time anyway.

They either get vacation or they quit/get laid off every six months. It is hard for me to think we are overworked when you look at our history and how lazy we are compared to those of our grandfathers/great grandfathers generation. Also if we work so hard, how is we can average something like 20 hours a week in TV watching. That chart is great propaganda. Like a commenter said, there are ways the employers are getting around these laws, so whatever the charts show, they don’t reflect reality for most of these countries citizens.

re: Iran

Now we need to just sit back and let the Iranian people get mad at their own government. Attacking them can only increase their solidarity.
