The likelihood that an idea will endure is inversely proportional to the lifespan of its copyright. Ideas that are committed into the domain of the public upon inception are more likely to survive into posterity than those whose archiving, distribution, and freedom to pass from one mind to the next are restricted by monopoly power.

The best part of that bit is that the writer's chiefly-known for a novel that's a derivative work of Shakespeare. So add hypocrisy to the list of other charges.

Haha, that's classic. I'm not familiar with his work. I guess he needs to track down Will's descendants and pay up!

Good counterargument. I didn't buy at all his insinuation that only big corporations profited from the passing of copyrighted works into the public domain.

I know this is terribly old, but I noticed someone followed a link from SOB to this LJ post of yours, read this discussion again, and felt like saying:

I guess the guy hasn't heard of stuff like Project Gutenberg if he thinks only corporations benefit -- or maybe he thinks "benefit" can only be measured in direct pecuniary profits.
